Poll for name for area provisionally named Pelynt by Boundary Commission

The Boundary Commission has specifically asked for more appropriate names to be suggested by the local communities for their consultation on new wards, which closes on February 10th.

Jim Candy, speaking as a Deviock Parish Councillor, said "The five parishes of Lanreath, Pelynt, Duloe, Morval and Deviock are provisionally called Pelynt. I believe that a better name could be chosen, as there could be confusion if Pelynt was used, as people could be referring to the parish or the new ward. I asked Cornish linguist Dr Ken George, who lives in Seaton, and others for suggestions, with a view to setting up a poll. These are set out below, in alphabetical order."

  • Bin Down is the name of the dominant hill: this name is an English name, and unfortunately we do not know the Cornish name of the hill, if it had one.

  • Gwarak Logh suggests an arcuate shape around Looe in Cornish.

  • Trelawney, historically long associated with the whole area, having owned property in all the parishes.

  • Trelawny, alternative spelling.

  • Triavon is Cornish for "Three rivers" a name based on the the rivers Seaton and East and West Looe, which transect the area.

  • Triglynn is Cornish for "Three deep valleys", through which the rivers flow.

  • Trinans is Cornish for "Three valleys".

  • Wivelshire was the name given to a larger area of East Cornwall that includes these five parishes, among others.

Current Results

Currently (5th Feb) 46% of the vote is for Trelawny or Trelawney. A comment has been received from John Blake "TRELAWNY seems to me to be most appropriate with its historical link and the families long and continued association with the area. I suspect that those who voted Trelawney inadvertently included the last e . After all 20,000 Cornishmen sing of TRELAWNY not Trelawney:-) Regards JB
