Organic Farming
Change to organic livestock
The Farm has been in
existence since medieval times and is
classed as anciently enclosed land in the
Cornwall Landscape Assessment. The hedges on
these small fields provides shelter for the
livestock.
Traditional South Devon cattle are reared
for beef and to provide replacements for the
Trerieve Herd of Pedigree South Devons. The
cattle help maintain the habitat, and in the
winter provide farm yard manure which is
composted and spread on the land to build
fertility. Calving takes place throughout
the spring and summer, so you may meet a
young baby calf.
Rare breed Devon and Cornwall Longwool ewes
lamb in the spring. During the summer the
ewes and their lambs graze the orchard and
pond area, and are shorn twice, providing
wool, which is sold to Sue Blackler’s
Natural Fibre Company (link)at Launceston.
It is then spun and used for a variety of
uses, including gardening twine, as it has a
long staple. The lambs are kept as
replacements or sold for mutton in the
winter.
